Scope
Routines come "prepackaged" with the SmartThings mobile app. The function of Routines allow you to automate devices based on user's presence, time of day, or by tappable buttons. To new users they're often confusing and useless.
To better serve users and allow them to understand this powerful way to automate their home, I thought of a potential way to educated the user through a simple journey that included a short animation.
User Journey
My proposal for the new experience starts with a Welcome message on landing page allowing the user to enter a setup flow. The initial page of the setup flow shows the Routines available to setup. After selecting the Routine the setup the user is then greeted with a short message about the Routine and an animation that shows what is possible after the Routine is setup. The user then enters a straightforward question and answer setup page and after it's completed is presented with the normal Routine landing page. The red alert icons let the user know that those Routines are not setup. To enter the setup process again, the user would tap on the gear in the upper right.
