Scope
As more RGB and Kelvin spectrum bulbs reach consumers, a comprehensive control was needed for quick adjustments to lighting within the SmartThings mobile app.
I was given the task to update the existing visuals and interactions. After coming up with several concepts I worked directly with developers to ensure what I was designing could be built and what specifications they had that need to be put into the design. Discussions helped to strip out unnecessary interactions (a cancel button), while helping to build open backend requirements to all for future improvements (picking color from a picture and carousel information).
This work was released with other improvements within the app that resulted in a 1-star increase in our App Store rating.
Original V2 implementation
The original implementation is shown here with the initial Hero Tile on the left and the Color Picker on the right. The dimming slider is arched over the actuating button, which caused some awkward interaction. The Color Picker was limited to the circle.
Updated Implementation
The updated implementation shows the initial Hero Tile on left with Color Picker on right. Initial Hero Tile has redesigned dimmer interaction on a straight line. Percentage dimmed was added above the dimmer bar, and allowed to be a part of a carousel which could display other information. The Color Picker was turned into a full screen overlay with a RGB and Kelvin spectrums. Preset colors exist at the bottom and are scrollable to allow a larger list to be present to user.
